This fish received its scientific name in tribute to the Inpa (National Institute for the Exploration of the Amazon, of Brazil) and kerri in homage to its former director, Dr. Estevan Kerri.

The body is light blue to violet in its upper part, with a wide strip of darker blue (almost purple) in the center. This strip narrows when reaching the head.
The adipose fin is brown or black in the female and blue in the male. The female has a long black line and in the male is rather navy blue, the ventral area is yellowish in the male and white in the female.
Omnivores, although they prefer small crustaceans, insects and larvae of insects. They accept scales, frozen food (brine shrimp, larvae, etc.) and live food.
