    Hyphessobrycon eques is an active fish, of association in group, reason why it must live in a school of 8 to 10 units. When it is not comfortable, it usually stays static in the water, hidden among the vegetation. It is common for them to persecute each other, although we should not be alarmed, since damage is not usually caused. However, it is one of the most quarrelsome tetras, and can nibble on the tails of some colleagues.

    Sexual differentiation is usually well defined not only by coloration (more intense in the male) but also by the size and shape of the fins. The male has the dorsal fin most pigmented in black while the female has no black coloration at the base of the fin. A black rhombus spot located behind the operculums distinguishes the male. This spot is usually absent, or may be inconspicuous, in specimens bred in captivity.
